the chair of the legal aid committee, hon. secretary harimwomugasho francis, council representative anne karungi and ceo joyce nalunga held a press conference at the uls secretariat on 21 june 2018 informing the general public on pro-bono day 2018 due to take place on 22 june 2018. useful links eac newsletter the judiciary of uganda. parliament of the republic of uganda ministry of justice and constitutional affairs justice law and order sector uganda east african law society (eals) president's message greetings from the executive council, management and staff of the . this is my first message as the president of the and on the onset i thank the membership for electing me as the president. you have given me an opportunity to contribute to the good work already done by the other past presidents. i wish to commend my predecessor and his council for their strong leadership and for having improved and maintained the image of the uls. i am happy to note that i am taking over from a council that has raised the bar so high especially regarding the brand of the uls. the incoming council will work hard to continue building on the past achievements not only of my predecessor but also achievements of all the other past presidents so as to have continuity in building a greater uls. the uls executive council’s commitment to the uls mission means that our energy and resources are directed to; consolidating the good practice of the engaging in rule of law initiatives. for example, setting up of a litigation department and establish a hotline to deal with legal impunity and to implement rule of law quarterly report recommendations and litigate against kcca on conversion of land from leasehold to freehold as resolved by the agm legal aid pro bono initiatives such as formulate a strategy paper on issues of lap to address the transition to uls, setting up the high level advisory panel on legal aid, reform the state brief system and increase recognition of pro bono lawyers building bridges such as set up a task force to establish the benevolent scheme as resolved at the agm, engage with young lawyers, senior lawyers and women lawyers on their role, lead efforts to commence building uls house on 1st july 2018, and support the high level advisory panel on rule of law to continue with their role. visibility and business growth for members for example, start the process of updating the uls website, set up a taskforce to come up with strategies to improve ethical legal practice in uganda, set up a business development committee, set up a liaison office to deal with our new incoming members, dealing with deterrent arrears and penalties preventing our absentee members from coming back, deal with cle issues to include but not limited to regional distribution of free cle, establishment of a cle calendar and more free cle’s, deal with compliance issues as relates to inspection of chambers, unfulfilled cle points among others, negotiate members benefits withy institutions such as stanbic bank, appointment and set up of the advisory committee on the uls innovation centre and commence plans to set up the uls arbitration centre. i with full confidence believe that the executive council will strive to achieve the above mentioned initiatives within the 100 day period and we request for the support of the member and the secretariat. we must strive to challenge ourselves to perform beyond limits for the general interest of all beneficiaries and stakeholders. as the council, we will also strive to preserve the highest levels of integrity and inclusiveness. i welcome the role of president as a tremendous honour and embrace wholeheartedly the opportunity to sever a vibrant uls. you have just voted in an executive council that is enthusiastic and energetic who will contribute tremendously and enormously achieving our goals and vision in execution of its statutory mandate to foster and improve access and administration of justice as well as good governance in uganda.” hold on to your hats- it’s going to be a great year for the uls yours sincerely, simon peter m. kinobe pr
